Station Camp Middle School Principal Mike Brown has been named Sumner County Schools' first district-wide athletic director, Director of Schools Del Phillips announced Thursday.

The part-time position will be responsible for district-level oversight of the county's interscholastic athletic programs.

Brown will retire as a full-time employee after a 37-year career with the school system that includes 20 years as a teacher and coach and 17 years as an administrator.

Brown started his career in education at Hawkins Middle School where he taught and coached basketball, track and football.

Eight years later he went on to teach and coach at Hendersonville High School where he spent 12 years - the last two as one of the school's assistant principals. During those 12 years, Brown coached the Commandos JV boys' basketball team for four years before becoming the school's head boys' basketball coach for another eight years.

Upon the mid-year retirement of long-time educator Lonnie Newton, Brown was named principal at Knox Doss Middle School in 2003. The school was later named Station Camp Middle School.

Brown said the athletic director position will allow him to combine his administrative skills with his love of sports.

"The athletics is obviously something I've always been interested in," he said.

"I cannot thank the Station Camp community enough for being supportive of me for the past 14 ½ years, and I am extremely proud of our school and the many accomplishments of our students. While I will miss the day-to-day interactions with the people who have made my career so rewarding, I look forward to new challenges that lie ahead of me."

Several surrounding school districts like Metro Nashville/Davidson County and Robertson County have countywide athletic directors, Phillips noted in 2016 when he added the position during the school system's annual budget process.

Brown said he's looking forward to working with principals and individual high school athletic directors to make sure many of the county's guidelines and procedures are uniform.

"Sumner County really does excel when it comes to athletics," Brown added. "There's a lot of positive things that go on here."

Brian Smith has been named to replace Brown at Station Camp Middle School.

He has served the past two years as a middle school coordinator for Sumner County Schools.

Brown holds a master's degree in educational leadership from the University of Tennessee at Martin, and previously served as the Dean of Culture for Metro Schools.
