The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the in-custody death of a man arrested by Gallatin Police early Friday morning, according to the agency.
Initial reports indicate the man, identified as 27-year-old Wilson L. Wendell, shot himself with a gun he had hidden on himself, according to TBI spokeswoman Susan Niland.
"While he was in the back of the patrol car being transported, he retrieved the gun from his person and appears to have shot himself in the head," Niland said in an email Friday. "He was transported to the hospital where he died."
No further details about the active and ongoing investigation have been released.
