Suicide is the second leading cause of death for middle and high school aged youth.  However, suicide has been labeled as a leading cause of preventable death.  Four out of five youth who attempt suicide exhibit clear warning signs prior to the attempt.  Many times, friends may see the changes in their friend’s behavior before anyone else.  This is what made the efforts of a Tennessee High School that much more impactful.

Pope John Paul II High School (JPII) is located in Hendersonville.  One of the Houses of the Catholic school has chosen The Jason Foundation (JFI) as a non-profit for which they would like to volunteer.  The Jason Foundation is a nationally recognized leader in youth suicide awareness and prevention.

Each year, JPII hosts the Caldwell Classic 5k which is organized by teachers and students.  All proceeds support The Jason Foundation that never charges for any program, material or service that is provided to the public.  Located in the same city as JFI, they have been supporting The Jason Foundation for numerous years and have contributed more than $30,000 to the organization since 2013.  Recently, the high school presented The Jason Foundation with a check from 2017’s event.  Pictured are the students that worked to make the event possible, Veronica Del Valle (Director of Houses, JPII) and members of The Jason Foundation staff.
