Through the lessons in the Girl Scouts “It’s Your World, Change It! — Agent of Change” Journey book, the girls learned about leadership and the ways they already are leaders in their community through what they already do. They decided they could work to make a change in the world like the women examples they learned about.

The girls love animals, school, and art so combining these seemed like a good idea. They considered what animal shelters in the area could use, but after learning that Gallatin High School is starting a dog grooming program they looked for a way to help them.

So they collected used t-shirts and created hand-made dog toys. They also used money earned through their 2018 Girl Scout Cookie sale to buy fleece with dog patterns to make tie-blankets to put at the bottom the GHS’s six new kennels. This will allow dogs coming for grooming to have fun with toys and to rest and relax on something soft and comfortable that can also be easily cleaned.

On May 21, the troop presented the toys and blanket mats to Amanda Lacy, a GHS Agriculture teacher and FFA sponsor.

GHS students started learning to groom dogs belonging to faculty members this spring, but the program will be open to the public during the 2018-2019 school year.

The girls had a fantastic time making these crafts and felt amazing helping the dogs. They were very happy and want to do it again at home for their pets as well. They hope that more people will want to do this. They think it would really improve the environment. You can start with the smallest thing, and it can just be donating beds, or picking up trash, and maybe before you know it, it will be huge.
