Wilson County Veterans gathered at the James E. Ward Agricultural Center early Tuesday morning for fellowship, food and to be honored for their service.

The breakfast for veterans was presented by Liberty State Bank. Bank Vice President Chris Crowell said they’ve hosted the annual event for over a decade and believe it’s important to give back to those who have served and sacrificed. Cumberland University President Dr. Paul Stumb, a veteran of the Navy, served as guest speaker.

VFW Post 5012 Sr. Vice Commander Ken Kackley enjoyed the breakfast with friends Harold Weist and Alton Stoner, veterans of the Vietnam War. Kackley said he’s enjoyed the event for six years now.

While a free meal is always nice, Kackley added what’s more important is just simply saying “thank you.”

“It’s important to respect veterans. Some people just don’t care and that’s how it was in Vietnam. That’s changed. People care more nowadays because they realize if it wasn’t for us veterans, they wouldn’t have the freedom they do,” he said.

Veterans Bob Potts, who served in the United States Marine Corp, and Bill Hamlet, also participated in the breakfast.

Father-son veterans Haywood Norman III and Haywood “Pete” Norman IV attended the event together. Norman III is a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. Norman IV is a Vietnam vet.

“My grandfather was in the military too,” Norman IV explained. “It’s a family tradition.”
