The Fresh Market announces Hendersonville exit

Just 28 months after opening its doors, The Fresh Market, Inc. announced Monday that it plans to close its Hendersonville location in Indian Lake Village.

According to a press release, Larry Appel, CEO of the grocery chain, said the decision to close the Hendersonville store, as well as 14 others, was made after a study showed the locations were “underperforming.”

“Over the last eight months, our company has been executing a turnaround plan and we’ve seen great progress,” Appel said. “However, for a variety of reasons unique to each retail location, that progress is not evenly distributed and, as a result, we have decided to close these long-term, underperforming stores. We will work to relocate as many impacted employees as possible to other stores within our footprint.”

Patrons also received a letter Monday saying that the store would be closing and would be discounting items beginning Tuesday. Residents will now have to drive to Brentwood if they want to continue shopping at The Fresh Market. That store is located at 235 Franklin Rd.

Residents that had rallied for a more upscale grocery took to the Hendersonville Standard Facebook page Monday after hearing the news – most expressing disappointment with the decision.

There is no specific date being given as far as the closure, but according to Amy Grossman, spokesperson for the food chain, stores typically shutter their doors within two to four weeks after making the announcement to close.

Other store closures in the company include Georgia (2), Illinois (4), Indiana (1), Kentucky (1), North Carolina (1), New Hampshire (1), Virginia (2) and Wisconsin (2).

Opened March 2, 2016, The Fresh Market is located at 217 Indian Lake Blvd. and is housed in a strip center which also includes the retail chains Off Broadway Shoes, Marshalls and Michaels.

Previous developers had sought to put an apartment complex on the site, but after the proposal drew ire from local residents in public hearings, city planners denied the request. The property was sold in 2015 to Merchant Point Development Associates for $3.18 million.
