The Blue Devils could not hold on to an early 14-0 lead and fell 20-14 in double overtime Friday night against Franklin Road Academy.
The game was scheduled last-minute due to other schools’ suspended seasons because of COVID-19. White House was scheduled to play Hunters Lane from Metro-Nashville Public Schools. FRA is a private school in Nashville and waited to play their first game Friday.
In the first half, the Blue Devils were clearly the better team. They took the ball 60 yards to the end zone on their first drive of the game. The drive totaled 12 plays and 7:39 of game time. Running back Montrel Black carried the ball the final two yards into the end zone.
White House quickly got the ball back and ran six more minutes off the clock but was unable to score on the offensive side of the ball.
The Panthers took over, but White House’s Evan Shankle tipped a pass that Drew Ferrell intercepted and took to the house. The score was 14-0 with just under 8 minutes remaining in the first half.
FRA’s offense stalled, and White House had the ball with 2:48 left in the second quarter. At worst, the Blue Devils could have gone into the locker room with a two score lead, but Ranen Blackburn lost two fumbles on consecutive drives to give the Panthers great field position.
FRA’s David DeRoucher connected with Tyler Speed for a 10-yard touchdown pass to get within seven points at halftime.
On the second play of the third quarter, DeRoucher found Conner Moore for a 25-yard touchdown pass. In less than two minutes of game time, the Panthers drew even.
Both defenses showed up the rest of the second half, allowing zero points, forcing overtime.
Both teams were held off the scoreboard in the first overtime, and in the second overtime period, White House could not get in the end zone on fourth down, leaving FRA with a chance to win the game.
DeRoucher had one more touchdown pass in him as he threw the ball to Jackson Cummiskey in the corner of the end zone on third down from the 25-yard line.
Ranen Blackburn was White House’s leading rusher and passer with 142 rushing yards and 32 passing yards but also had the two key fumbles before halftime.
David DeRoucher led the way for the Panthers with 175 passing yards and three touchdowns through the air.
White House will try to recover from the loss at Springfield on Friday, Sept. 18. FRA will also travel that day to Davidson Academy for the second game of the season.
