Dreon Key

A Nashville man who stole a Sumner County Sheriff’s Office vehicle while in police custody in April was re-captured July 4 after deputies deployed tear gas at a home in White House.

Dreon Key, 21 of Nashville, faces criminal charges in several jurisdictions, including Sumner County, for crimes that include aggravated kidnapping, aggravated assault and evading arrest.

Key was being transported to the Bedford County Jail to appear in court on charges in that county when he escaped in a Sumner County Sheriff’s Office vehicle on April 27. The vehicle was later recovered in Nashville.

Sheriff’s office detectives had been following up on leads in the White House area when a deputy found a car that had been reported stolen from Spring Hill, according to Chief Deputy Aaron Pickard. Key had been spotted in a similar vehicle days earlier.

“Our detective narrowed his search and eventually determined that Key was inside a nearby home,” Pickard said in a news release. When members of the department’s Emergency Response Team learned that Key was hiding in the home’s attic, they deployed gas after he refused to leave, according to Pickard. Key eventually surrendered to authorities.

Key was arrested in March by Portland Police for his role in an incident in November in which he allegedly kidnapped and robbed two men at gun point. He is charged in Sumner County with two counts of aggravated kidnapping, two counts aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary, three counts of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during a felony, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, driving on a revoked license and leaving the scene of an accident. He is also charged with felony escape following his arrest last week. He is being held in the Sumner County Jail on a $500,000 bond.

Key’s charges in Bedford County stem from an incident that occurred in December and include speeding, evading arrest, reckless endangerment, theft and simple possession/casual exchange.

Court documents show Key is also wanted on a felony warrant in Christian County Kentucky.
