Pope John Paul II High School announced that Madison (Madi) B. Bagsby and Amanda (Alex) K. Garretson have been named Commended Students in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program.
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2020 competition.
Bagsby came to JPII from Station Camp Middle School. Throughout her high school career at JPII, she has exhibited strength academically and in a variety of leadership roles. She is an active member of Long Hollow Baptist Church. She is currently taking a challenging senior course load including AP English, AP Calculus AB, and AP Biology as well as leading the JPII nationally ranked Model UN team in addition to also supporting students with developmental delays as a Peer Mentor in the JPII Hand In Hand Options program.
She will pursue advanced degrees in business and international relations ultimately hoping to attend law school and is the daughter of Bart and Angela Bagsby of Gallatin.
Garretson was homeschooled through Aaron Academy prior to attending JPII. As a top student, she is committed to her academic pursuits and to the JPII Cornerstone Ministry program. She is an active member of St. John Vianney Church.
Garretson’s rigorous senior course schedule includes AP Calculus BC, AP Computer Science, AP Psychology, AP Physics C, AP English, AP Micro/Macro Economics and she is currently interning through the JPII INNOV8 program with Civil Site Design Group, an engineering firm. Alex has a strong interest in pursuing an advanced degree in environmental engineering. She is the daughter of Greg and Mary Garretson of Gallatin.
