A Gallatin man has been charged with attempted first-degree murder after police say he fired several shots at an apartment in Hendersonville’s Marina Pointe apartment complex earlier this month.

Matthew Sawyer, 31, is charged with attempted first-degree murder and reckless endangerment for an incident that occurred at around 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 6 at the complex on Carrington Road.

A female victim said she was watching television in her bedroom when at least three shots were fired striking a door frame and breaking glass, according to a police affidavit filed in Sumner General Sessions Court. Several witnesses reported seeing four black males around the apartment before the shooting and seeing the males flee the area after the shooting.

Following their investigation, police determined the men were looking for a man who lived across from the apartment that was hit by gunfire, and that he had been the intended target of the shooting. A woman told police that Sawyer had threatened to shoot up the residence if she didn’t stop seeing the man, according to the affidavit.

The affidavit also states that Sawyer’s car was observed on a license plate recognition camera at the time of the shooting, and that he was identified in a photo lineup as one of the men on scene during the shooting.

He was arrested and charged on Nov 10, and is being held in the Sumner County Jail on a $250,000 bond. Sawyer is scheduled to appear in General Sessions Court at 9 a.m. on Dec. 9.

Police are asking anyone with information related to the incident that may help identify the other men who were with Sawyer at the time of the shooting to call the HPD criminal investigation division at 615-264-5303. Anonymous reports may be made to Hendersonville Crime Stoppers at 615-594-4113. Tips may also be submitted using the P3 Tips Mobile Application.
