Maddox Prichard

Station Camp Middle School student Maddox Prichard recently pitched his invention, the Measuring Shovel, on the TV show “Shark Tank.” The episode will air Nov. 3.

A Station Camp Middle School student will appear in an upcoming episode of the popular reality TV show, “Shark Tank.”

Maddox Prichard, who invented his Measuring Shovel while in the fourth grade, will appear with his family in an episode that airs Nov. 3.

“Shark Tank” features entrepreneurs who pitch a product to a panel of investors, or “sharks,” who decide whether or not to invest in their company.

Prichard first created his device – a shovel with markings that allow one to see how deep and how wide he or she is digging – for a project at Union Elementary STEM and Demonstration School.

After winning first place in his grade at the MTSU state Invention Convention that year, Prichard was selected to attend the National Invention Convention in Washington, D.C., in May of 2016.

There, his invention won an award sponsored by Stanley Black & Decker for students in grades 4 through 12.

The student’s application for a patent for his invention was approved by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in October of 2018.

In the spring, Prichard, who is now 13, attended an open call for “Shark Tank” in Louisville, Ky.

“We were out of town during the Nashville open call,” said the teen’s mother, Amanda.

Her son has been asked to keep the show’s results a secret until it airs, Amanda Prichard added.

Prichard also won $1,500 in a StartUP Gallatin competition in July.

“When we were selecting our third StartUP Gallatin cohort, a 10-week entrepreneur program using Co.Starters curriculum, we knew that adding a young entrepreneur to the mix was going to work out one of two ways: really bad or exceptionally well,” said Gallatin Chamber of Commerce CEO Kim Baker. “From day one, Maddox proved to be quite the latter of the two.”

Baker said she was impressed each week by the teen who knew his business model front and back, and even offered suggestions to other participants.

“He took home first place at our StartUP Gallatin Pitch Night and it's no surprise to me that he earned a spot on “Shark Tank,” she added. “We look forward to attending the watch party and seeing what'll happen next for Maddox and the Measuring Shovel.”

The episode of “Shark Tank” featuring Maddox Prichard’s Measuring Shovel airs locally at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3 on ABC.
