Darryl Drake, age 62 was born to the late George and Marian Drake in Louisville, Kentucky. He transitioned from this earthly life into eternal life on August 11, 2019.
Darryl was an American football player and coach. Darryl began his journey as a wide receiver for Western Kentucky University from 1975 to 1978. Darryl went on to play wide receiver for three professional teams, The Washington Redskins in 1979, The Ottawa Rough Riders in 1981 and The Cincinnati Bengals in 1983. Upon completing his stent as an athlete, Darryl went on to receive a master's degree in Business from Western Kentucky University.
Darryl began his college coaching path as the Wide Receivers Coach for Western Kentucky University, The University of Georgia, Baylor University and The University of Texas.
His journey led him on a successful National Football career lasting 15 years, including nine consecutive seasons with the Chicago Bears, followed by five seasons with the Arizona Cardinals and one and a half seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Darryl spent four decades using football as his ministry, training, molding and shaping young men into athletes and role models.
Darryl has deep family roots in Gallatin, Tennessee.
He is survived by his wife, Sheila Drake; three daughters, Shanice, Felisha and Marian; two grandchildren, Sydney and Londynn; one brother, Derrick Drake; two nephews, Che Kelly and Derrick Drake Jr.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Visitation with the family will be held, Saturday, August 17, 2019, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., funeral to follow at First Baptist Church, 290 E. Winchester Street, Gallatin, TN. Interment Drake Cemetery, Castilian Springs, TN.
