Leon Wooten

Leon Wooten, 90, of the Underwood Community of Macon County, TN passed away on Tuesday, June 23, 2020, at Sumner Regional Medical Center in Gallatin, TN.  


Funeral services for Leon were held on Saturday, June 27, 2020, at 2:00 p.m. from the Underwood Missionary Baptist Church with Elder Troy White officiating.  Burial was in the Underwood Cemetery with Military Honors.  Barney Wooten, Hunter Wooten, Lee Wooten, Clint Doss, Nathan Gammons, Gary Brown, and Jamie Robinson served as Pallbearers.  Clovis Leon Wooten was born on Monday, October 14, 1929, in Macon County, one of five children born to the late Chess and Dollie (Perdue) Wooten.  


In addition to his parents a brother, Homer Wooten, preceded him in death.  He married the former Betty Griggs on October 5, 1956, who survives.  Leon was inducted into the United States Army on January 22, 1951.  


Private First Class Clovis L. Wooten was honorably discharged on January 2, 1957.  Leon had worked in realty some but his passion was for farming, which he did all his life.  He had been a member of the Historical Society, Macon County Board of Supervisors of the Macon County Soil Conservation District and a member of the Macon County School Board from 1970 to 1976.  He was proud of being on the Belview Softball Team in 1950.  He was a member of the Macon County Fox Hunters Association and loved to rabbit and turkey hunt.  While at home in his bed, Leon called on the Lord and was saved on February 19, 1963.  


In addition to his wife of 63 years, he is survived by, sons, Barney, and wife, Amanda Wooten, Lee Wooten of the Underwood Community, daughter, Jennifer and husband, Ricky Gammons of Lafayette, brothers, Ralph Cleon and wife, Sylvia Wooten of Mesa, Arizona, Opey and wife, Pauline Wooten of Indianapolis, IN, sister, Mary Katherine Pitcock of Lebanon, grandchildren, Clint Doss and Nathan Gammons of Lafayette, Hunter Wooten of the Underwood Community, great-grandchildren, Caydence Doss and Haven Doss both of Lafayette and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
