Martha (“Marti”) Mae Griffin went home to the Lord on January 8, 2021 in Memphis, Tennessee.
Marti was born in Des Moines, Iowa and was the youngest of four children, she graduated from East High School in 1962, before attending Drake University where she met the love of her life, Larry. After living in Warsaw, Indiana, they moved to Gallatin Tennessee in 1977 and she worked as a teacher’s aide in the vocational department at Gallatin High School for several years prior to working the hospitality industry. She retired as the Director of Business Sales for the Hampton Inn in Gallatin, Tennessee and the Holiday Inn in Hendersonville, Tennessee in 2002 and moved to Bradenton, Florida where she and Larry enjoyed playing tennis, going to beach, riding bicycles, and soaking up the warm weather over the last two decades. She recently moved to Memphis, Tennessee to be closer to her grandchildren.
Marti loved her family and loved to tell both her friends and strangers about her sons, Todd and Jeffrey, and more recently her grandchildren, Nathaniel and Mary Kirksey. She was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church in Gallatin. She also loved spending time with her friends, dinners at the beach, Mickey Mouse and the Magic Kingdom, Paul Anka, and traveling. She will be remembered for her love for family and friends, her laugh, her geniality, and her willingness to sacrifice her own happiness for the happiness of others.
She is predeceased by her parents, Hattie and Burl Foster, her brothers William (“Bill”) Foster, Jr. and Dean Foster, her sister Pauline Deters, her niece Toni Ann Walton Huerta (Jose), and her nephew Thomas Foster. She is survived by her husband Larry, her sons Todd and Jeffrey (Heather), her grandchildren Nathaniel and Mary Kirksey, her nephew Tony (Carol) Foster, her nephew David (Barbara) Deters and her sister-in-law Audrey Foster.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a family memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any memorials be sent to Martha Griffin Memorial Fund c/o First Horizon Bank, Attn: Sherry Williams, 4385 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee 38117. All proceeds will be donated to the Gallatin Senior High School Career and Technical Education Department where Marti taught for several years, was loved, and made a difference in the lives of several young people. She will be missed dearly.
