Shirley Dean Summers West

Shirley Dean Summers West, age 77, of Lafayette, passed away on Monday, July 2, 2018 at Hendersonville Medical Center.  

Funeral services for Shirley West were held on Friday, July 6, 2018 at 11 a.m. from the Anderson & Son Funeral Home Chapel in Lafayette with Elder Barry Davenport officiating.  Burial followed in the Walton Cemetery in Lafayette. Daniel Fowler, Will Hunter, Rondall Wilkerson, Gary Raines, Jimmy Shrum and Ricky West served as pallbearers.

Shirley Dean Summers West was born on June 3, 1941, one of six children born to the late Denver “Studebaker” and Willie Mae (Hancock) Summers.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Randall K. “Doodle” Wilkerson, stillborn infant daughter, Sherry Lee West, brothers, Charles Thompson, James “Johnny” Summers, sisters, Geraldine Linville, Adah Raines and Sharon “Cookie” Saunders.  She married Prentice L. West on May 4, 1963, who survives. Shirley worked at Imperial Reading for 19 years and Carter Automotive for 2 years. After working at these factories, Shirley became a nurse. Back then, she could become a Registered Nurse with on the job training and she had a few classes at Volunteer State.  This was her calling, for she thoroughly enjoyed 21 years in nursing at Macon County General Hospital. Shirley enjoyed reading and was a frequent visitor at the Macon County Library, she enjoyed gospel singing, and loved Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member.

In addition to her husband of 55 years, she is survived by:  granddaughters and their spouse, Heather Ashley and Daniel Fowler, Holly Leeann and Will Hunter, great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Brooke Fowler and William Holden Hunter, all of Lebanon, TN, brother-in-law, Kenneth West of Clinton, TN, sisters-in-law, Cornelia Swindle of Red Boiling Spring, TN, Ann Harrison of Lafayette, TN and several nieces and nephews.
