Are you keeping your heart healthy?  While New Year’s resolutions may have already come and gone, it is never too late to make healthy changes.  In February, we are reminded to focus on heart health with all of the beautiful hearts displayed for Valentine’s Day.

As part of UT Extension-Sumner County, we invite you to do your heart a favor and move more!  Join us virtually every Thursday night in February from 6:30-7 p.m. on our Facebook page where we will share videos on how to be more active!  Throughout the month of February, we will also share heart healthy tips and information about upcoming free nutrition classes.  Our Facebook page can be found at www.facebook.com/UTExt.SumnerCounty

According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. One in four people pass away from heart disease each year.  However, there is a lot we can do to live a heart healthy life such as . . . yes, you know the answers . . .  by making healthier eating choices, by being more active, by reducing stress, by not smoking, by getting enough sleep, and by meeting with your doctor on a regular basis.

Working towards improved health is one of the best gifts you can give yourself.  So, what is your motivation to get healthy?  Having more energy to keep up with the kiddos in your family?  Being able to walk your four-legged friends without getting out of breath?  Increasing your chances of having a stronger immune system?  Or, being able to live independently for as long as possible?  For questions about our upcoming healthy living classes, email jbiggs2@utk.edu

What we do today does affect our tomorrows, but we don’t have to beat ourselves up when we slip up.  We can acknowledge our unhealthy choices, learn from them, and move on.  Don’t give up and don’t dwell on mistakes.  Instead, focus on this inspiring quote, “Do something today that your future self will thank you for.”  Here’s to making our hearts healthier in 2021!
