Hairy Moose to the Rescue

The Hairy Moose in Gallatin saved my dog four hours south in Lawrenceville, Ga. Thank goodness for animal lovers, identification chips, and selfless people who go out of their way on holidays for no other reason than they are simply nice.

I adopted my dog Leo from the Hairy Moose about 10 years ago. The Hairy Moose is a kennel, a doggy day care, and a no-kill rescue shelter. Someone had dropped Leo off because they couldn’t keep him anymore. When the Hairy Moose got Leo, they put a chip in him with all their contact info.

Leo and I went to Lawrenceville, Ga. the day before Thanksgiving to spend the holiday with family. Lawrenceville is about four hours from Gallatin. Leo and the humans were sitting in a fenced-in back yard Wednesday night when Leo found a way out of the fence and ran off very quickly. He has been to this home before and had never attempted to leave. We searched for him for hours.

Long story short: An animal control officer in Lawrenceville, Ga. found Leo Thanksgiving day, scanned his chip, and called the Hairy Moose in Gallatin. It so happens that the owner of the Hairy Moose has a cousin in Marietta, Ga. She called her cousin who almost immediately drove more than an hour away from his home to retrieve Leo from animal control on Thanksgiving Day. The next day, this man volunteered to meet me halfway to where I was staying in Lawrenceville, Ga. to reunite me with my dog.

There are so many other divine intervention details to this story, but the important parts are that strangers in another state who did not know me or my dog cared enough to rescue him and make every effort to reconnect him with his owner. And it all started in Gallatin when the Hairy Moose put an identification chip in the dog I eventually adopted.

I cannot thank all these people enough. Please make sure your pets have identification chips. Please also consider donating to the Hairy Moose and other no-kill rescue shelters in Gallatin. They invest so much in these animals that may one day be part of your family.
