Being a mother is best told in the life of her children.

I have two that call me “mom” — my daughter Autumn (18) and son Jayce (7). I never imagined I would have my heart walking around outside of my body, but it does. They have shown me what pure and unconditional love is.

If you ask my son, he will tell you, “(My mom) is perfect, but not too perfect because that’s impossible.”

I feel like some kinda bribery was involved in that one. My daughter will tell you I am the funniest person she knows. I definitely encourage her to get out more. Ask them both something I say a lot and they will tell you: “I love you.” I am guilty, but I don’t apologize for that. That is something they will never have to question.

I have to be honest; I wing this mom gig daily. I kinda have the upper hand though, they have no one to really compare me to. I hold myself accountable for who they grow up to become. Always have integrity to do the right thing, always be humble and kind. Don’t let this world change you. Dream big and chase after it.

Giving birth to my small fan club hasn’t been a stroll in the park. They’re relentless, needy and most days I find myself two shades away from the color “crazy.” I wouldn’t change it for the world; it gives me a sense of purpose.

Reminiscing about life can be bittersweet. It makes me miss the diaper days and sleepless nights.

My son is at the age where hugging him in front of his friends is not cool. My daughter is busy making plans for her own future. She graduates high school in a few weeks. My biggest fear used to be keeping her alive till she turned 18. Now she is 18 and my fear is not having control.

She is responsible for her life now. My hope is she will use the many years of unsolicited advice I have given and become everything her heart desires.

I am not the picture-perfect mom by any means; I make mistakes and probably curse a lot. Till my last breath, I will love them and be their mom.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there. Especially the ones surviving on a “wing and wine.”
