GMA Master Instructor Spillmann wins MMA fight




Gallatin Martial Arts Center’s Master Instructor Kurt Spillmann competed on Sept. 16 in Murrieta, California in a mixed martial arts event. The event was hosted by Cage Wars MMA. Spillmann weighed in at 215 pounds, facing a much larger opponent who weighed in at 272 pounds.

Spillmann began attacking with several well-placed strikes and a jumping head kick. His opponent took Spillmann to the ground, where he avoided damage and got the fight stood back up on the feet. Following the stand up, Spillmann finished the match with a guillotine choke, earning a win via tap out just 52 seconds into the match.     

Spillmann has been a competitor in TaeKwondo since the age of 4 and a competitor in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu since the age of 9. He has won several gold medals and major national championships. Spillmann trained and coached by his father and predominately trains in TaeKwonDo, Rocian Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and boxing. 

Spillmann, who is a fourth-degree black belt, has been fighting in MMA events in California, while training at a friendship school called Fight Syndicate. He will return in October for the ITF TaeKwonDo Black Belt Retreat, where International TaeKwonDo Federation Black Belts from all over the world will be attending.

GMA is a local martial arts and MMA academy that offers classes for men, women, children and families. The Black Belt Retreat will be hosted by Kwanjangnim Spillmann, an eighth-degree black belt and coach. All of KwanJangNim’s sons are current/ former fighters and competitors.
