Hawks claim Region 5-5A crown

N. MT. JULIET – The Green Hill Hawks enjoyed their 48-0 win Friday night over Station Camp, the only other team with an unbeaten record in Region 5-5A.

Thirty minutes after the game ended, Hawks coaches and fans started an even bigger celebration for the second-year school’s first region championship.

Hillwood’s 13-7 victory over Mt. Juliet – the only other team with a chance to win the region championship – gave the Hawks the outright title and No. 1 region seed for the playoffs.

A group of Green Hill coaches gathered around the 40-yard line to watch the final minutes of the Mt. Juliet-Hillwood game on their phones.

The Hawks (8-1, 5-0) end the regular season Friday, Oct. 29 at Mt. Juliet.

Station Camp (7-2, 4-1), which was playing to win its first region championship since 2013, ends the regular season at Hunters Lane and are in strong position to host a first-round playoff game.

“We took care of ourselves and everything else took care of itself,” Green Hill Coach Josh Crouch said. “This is the first region championship I have been a part of so that takes care of a bucket list item for me. I cannot be happier for the players and coaches and faculty and community.

“We have played just 19 games and now we will be hanging a banner.”

Big plays from Kaleb Carver and the Green Hill defense put the Hawks into position to finish the night as region champions.

Carver turned a screen pass into a 46-yard scoring play in the second quarter, took a pitch on a reverse and ran 76 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter, and caught a pass at midfield on the way to a 93-yard scoring play in the fourth quarter. He also appeared to have scored on a 60-yard punt return in the first quarter, but it was wiped out by a penalty.

For the season Carver has 32 catches for 658 yards and 11 touchdowns.

“We have run that play (reverse) plenty of times this year. I just have to get a good pitch from Brax (Lamberth), and it was right there tonight,” Carver said.

The Hawks posted the program’s first shutout with two interceptions (both by David Childress), two fumble recoveries, four sacks and held the Bison to 91 yards rushing and 31 yards passing (zero in the first half). Station Camp, which has lost two games in a row, did not get a first down until Robert Bogus’ 4-yard run four minutes into the second quarter.

“We knew we had to be physical tonight because Station Camp is a physical team and we had to match that,” Crouch said.

Sam Crickmar kicked two field goals in the first half as Green Hill led 20-0 at intermission.

Brax Lamberth led Green Hill with 141 yards on 20 carries, his seventh 100-yard rushing game of the season. He did not play for one series in the first quarter because of an arm injury and had a 66-yard touchdown run wiped out by a penalty. On fourth-and-1 in the third quarter, he scored on a 12-yard run to give the Hawks a 34-0 lead.

The Green Hill students among the 1,667 fans at the game celebrated Lamberth’s touchdown by chanting “We Want MJ.” Crouch said that additional seats were added to the student section for the game.

Cade Mahoney threw three touchdown passes and completed 11-of-14 passes for 224 yards.

Halfback Luke Dickens led the Bison with 56 yards rushing on 14 carries and had one catch for 13 yards.

“We didn’t show really show up tonight,” Station Camp Coach Brent Alexander said. “We have really lost our identity the past two weeks. We didn’t execute in any phase of the game. We will show up next week and try to get better. We know the week after that is guaranteed.”
