The Pope John Paul II Lady Knights came out scorching hot in Friday’s home game against rival Father Ryan, grabbing a 9-0 lead to start the game. But the hot start cooled and Father Ryan stormed back to take a 36-23 victory.

“We came out with a lot of energy and created turnovers and scoring opportunities,” JPII coach Angi Puckett said. “But we weren’t able to sustain that. We looked tired.”

Father Ryan clamped down defensively, holding JPII to zero points in the second quarter and only four in the fourth.

“They play a really good, packed-in man defense,” Puckett said. “We got some good looks, we just weren’t converting our opportunities.”

JPII came out with a trapping press, causing several turnovers in the opening minutes of the game. The Lady Knights converted those turnovers into points.

LA Pearson and Keonoa Chumley led the way with 5 and 4 points, respectively, as the Lady Knights built a 9-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

JPII hit 5 of its first 7 shots from the field, while Father Ryan missed its only shot.

But from there, the tables turned.

JPII missed its next 12 shots, including all 7 in the second quarter. The only point they scored during that stretch came from a Pearson free throw.

Meanwhile, Father Ryan finished the first quarter hitting 4 of 7 shots to cut JPII’s lead to 10-8 going into the second quarter. The Lady Irish took the lead late in the second quarter and held a 15-10 lead at the half.

JPII started the third quarter as hot as it did in the first, scoring seven unanswered points on baskets from Anastin Lee and Lillie Van Metre and a 3-pointer by Chumley to take a 17-15 lead.

Then, the momentum shifted back to Father Ryan. The Lady Irish went on a 15-2 run to build a 30-19 lead in the fourth quarter before finishing with a 36-23 win.

Maddie Dooling led Father Ryan with 12 points and Camille Knoll added 11. Pearson led JPII with 8 points and Chumley with 7.

The win improved Father Ryan to 7-1, while JPII dropped to 7-2. The Lady Knights will play White House on Dec. 27 in the Zaxby’s Christmas Classic at Goodpasture Christian.
