Following situational drills that saw both offensive units score points, Ravenwood and JPII battled for one scoreless quarter Friday night before the scrimmage was cut short due to an injury on the field.

Despite the somber end to the scrimmage, head coach Justin Geisinger left Williamson County excited about his team’s play on the field.

“I think the encouraging thing at the end was we played really good football against a quality Ravenwood team,” he said. “We were right there with them all night. There is still a lot of room for growth but I was optimistic after Friday night.”

The Knights will again test themselves against 6A Williamson County foe Brentwood this Friday night in what coach Geisinger calls a dress rehearsal for game one against Overton.

“Brentwood is a good team, and a good challenge for us,” he said. “Though they will present a quality challenge we are worried about only ourselves, but at the same time we schedule these tough preseason games because this is what we expect to see in our region this year. Friday night will be a mock game and preparation day for our guys both on and off the field. Everything will be treated like a normal game day.”

The big play for the Knights on the night came when junior running back Antwan Roberts raced 80 yards for the score in his first action this preseason.

“Coming in our plan was to give him limited touches and after the scrimmage was over we felt pretty good about it,” he said. “We went in knowing we would limit him but we want to get him even more work this week. We saw what we needed to see out of him.”

The Knights are also breaking in first year quarterback Sawyer Watts, and even though Watts has game experience on the field he doesn’t have much experience under center. Despite his lack of playing time at that position, Geisinger stated that he thinks his junior signal caller is getting better.

“I thought he got better Friday night,” Geisinger stated. “He did a good job of managing the game and got better as it went along. He did a good job of not forcing things when there was protection issues. We let him know that he has help around him and he understands that. He did a good job of managing the game and was smart with the football.”

JPII will host Brentwood on Friday night, 7:00 p.m.
