MURFREESBORO — A second consecutive come-from-behind victory was not in the cards for the Station Camp Lady Bison volleyball team as it dropped its first-round match against Houston 3-2, falling into the loser’s bracket at the 2018 TSSAA state volleyball championships.

The loss is Station Camp’s first defeat since the regular season and was the second match in a row the Lady Bison faced an 0-2 hole heading into the third set. The loss drops Station Camp to 43-4 on the season.

Just like in the sectional match against Ravenwood, Station Camp forced a set five after taking sets two and three from the Mustangs.

“I think it just makes them work a little bit harder,” Station Camp coach Molly Yarbrough said of the team’s 0-2 start in back-to-back games. “I wish they didn’t like that (back against the wall mentality) so much.”

After falling behind 7-0 in set one, Station Camp fought back to within one before falling 25-23 in what seemed to be a momentum-swinging set.

The two teams battled back and forth for the first 10 points of the match before Houston took off on an 8-2 run, blowing the match open at 19-13. Following a Station Camp timeout, the Lady Bison managed just six of 12 points, falling 25-19 and into the 2-0 hole.

Facing elimination, Station Camp battled in set three, getting up as much as 10 points before slamming the door shut on a sweep, 25-13.

“We changed some things defensively going into the third set, but mostly we started to serve-receive better,” Yarbrough stated. “That is when we got going.”

Station Camp carried that momentum over into the fourth set, dominating Houston 25-17 with a lead as big as 10 points.

Unfortunately, the fifth-and-final set did not swing in favor of Station Camp as the Lady Bison dropped the set and the match 12-15. The loss puts Station Camp in the loser’s bracket against Dobyns-Bennett, which lost to Brentwood earlier in the day. The match is set for 6:30 p.m. at Siegel High School.

“I just told them that in order to get to the championship we needed to come out of the loser’s bracket,” Yarbrough said of her post-match speech. “You either win every match or you drop down and that is what we are going through. Just keep reinforcing that someone has to come from the loser’s bracket so it might as well be us. We will go eat, relax and come up with a game plan before the next match.”
