Familiar foes met again in this year’s Sumner County Middle School Girls Soccer League Championship Game. Station Camp entered the contest with a 7-0 record, including a 3-0 semifinal win over Hunter, while Ellis knocked off Gallatin 3-0 to advance. With a record of 5-1-1, Ellis’s only loss came in the regular season matchup between these same two juggernauts.

The game was a defensive battle for most of the first half, until Tournament MVP, Taylor Hahn, surgically placed a ball through the staunch Ellis defense, finding the feet of Mallorie Springs, who then slipped the ball past Ellis’s goalkeeper, Katie Cathey, into the side of the net to put Station Camp up 1-0 in the 22nd minute.

Ellis battled back in the second half, and in the 38th minute, Lilly Filler cranked a rocket off a free kick from 30 yards out. The ball ricocheted off the crossbar, and an alert Kyndall Cripps quickly placed the ball past Station Camp’s goalkeeper, Audri Davis, to knot the score at 1-1.

Both teams had excellent scoring opportunities down the stretch, but both team’s goalkeepers were tenacious. Just as the game appeared to be headed to overtime, the Station Camp offense mustered one final attack in the 58th minute. Ellis’s goalkeeper, Katie Cathey, made a diving save to scoop the ball away from crossing the goal line, but Station Camp’s Kinlee Wiggins found her way behind the Ellis backline to rebound the save and served the ball back into the net, securing the 2-1 victory for the Bison.

The Championship is the second for Station Camp coach, Stephen Williams.

“I was honored to lead these girls,” he said. They all had great attitudes, great effort and had loads of fun while improving their level. We had a few girls step up during the season, and I’m proud of them for going undefeated. We are losing multiple 8th graders, but we have some great leaders returning for next year.”

Middle School League Commissioner, Jerry Becker, added, “I’m extremely appreciative of all the coaches and managers who dedicated their time and energy into making this season happen for these girls. It’s wonderful to see the girls get out there with their classmates and enjoy the game they love to play, while representing their schools. I’d also like to thank Todd Szymanski and the Hendersonville Soccer Club, as well as all of the High School soccer programs, for their support of Middle School soccer here in Sumner County. I’d like to specifically thank HHS Soccer for accommodating a last minute change of venues due to the weather, and affording us the opportunity to play our Championship Game today. We have a tremendous soccer community throughout all of Sumner County.”
