GALLATIN – Middle School basketball opened up Monday evening as Hunter travelled up the road to take on Station Camp.

The Hunter girls sprinted out to a 13-5 lead by the end of the first quarter, thanks in part to Riley Lang’s 4 points. The Lady Bucs went to their full-court press midway through the quarter and increased the pace of the game and lead 19-11 at the half.

“Three minutes into the game, both of my post players had foul trouble and had to come out and that really hurt us,” SC girls coach Ashley Sinyard said. “Our game plan was out the window and we never really recovered.”

In the third quarter, Hunter only scored three points and the Bison could not find the net. Hunter’s defense was almost suffocating at times, taking advantage of the inexperience and youth of the Station Camp team.

“Our press was good tonight,” Hunter girls coach Craig Logan said. “we turned them over quite a bit (19 turnovers), where we struggled was putting the ball in the basket so we really didn’t turn those into points tonight.”

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Bucs press began to produce points as they outscored Station Camp 11-7 to win the game 33-18. Riley Messer, Riley Long and Alex Gift led the Lady Bucs with 6 points each while McCall Moss chipped in 5 points. Kealey Jackson had 7 points and Cami Klein added 5 for the Lady Bison in the loss.

“We work on getting the good shot, but it’s not always a layup,” Sinyard added. So, moving forward, we have something to work on (look for shots).

They say speed kills, but so does height. In the boys game, Station Camp used a massive advantage in height to run away from Hunter early in the game as the Bison built a 23-4 halftime margin.

“We might have been a little shell shocked in the first half, didn’t get a lot of offense,” Hunter coach Drew Lowery said.

“We did a good job in the first half of defending and rebounding got a little helter skelter in second half, we didn’t hold our composure as much,” Station Camp coach Jeremy Bartlett added.

Ben Ogan drained two 3-pointers to help the Bison jump out to a 10-1 lead at the end of the first quarter, and in the second, four different Bison scored in an all-out assault on Hunter. For all intents and purposes, the game was over.

But somebody forgot to tell Hunter, because the Bucs worked hard in the second half. The Bucs broke out in a full-court, 1-2-2 press and picked up the intensity and pace of the game. The 3s that weren’t dropping in the first half started to fall, and suddenly, they had cut the lead to nine points (33-24) with two minutes left in the game.

An 8-point run got them to within striking distance, but the Bison took control and slowed the game down to hang on to a 35-24 victory on opening night.

“They came out the second half more confident and were willing to lay it on the line,” added Lowery. “Station Camp plays good half-court defense and when you get your shots you have to make them, we will learn from this and find some ways to get the ball in the basket,”

“They (Hunter) did a good job in the second half, sped the game up but we should be able to handle it,” Bartlett added. “Give them credit they did a good job getting some steals. It was a good team win, I was proud off all of them tonight.”
