HENDERSONVILLE — Station Camp has taken the next steps on the tennis court.
In his eighth season, the Bison, led by head coach Andy Holliday, secured both the boys and girls individual district championships, along with the boys team championship and boys doubles championship at Memorial Park over the course of several days.
The individual championships won by juniors Carter Ramthun and Marisa Wirtz mark the second for Ramthun and the first girls title since Shelly Knight.
The boys team championship is the first in school history.
“I think we are closing the gap some,” Holliday said. “All the credit goes to the kids. This group has shown residency all year long and it has carried over to game day. Up until last week we had been practicing at Vol State, coming to Memorial Park to practice, staying after matches at various locations to get practice in.”
The tennis courts at Station Camp High School have remained locked due to poor court conditions. However, coach Holliday says the problem should be fixed soon.
“We are getting three courts resurfaced, so that shouldn’t be an issue moving forward,” he said.
On top of Ramthum, Wirtz and the Bison boys winning their respective championships, the doubles crew of Chase Etheredge and Lance Watson defeated Hendersonville and Wilson Central to win the doubles championship.
“This week shows that tennis at Station Camp can be a power,” Holliday said. “This gives the rest of the team something to aspire for. Marisa, Carter, Chase, Lance, they make us all better.”
The duo of Etheredge and Watson will advance with Ramthun and Wirtz to the Region Tournament on May 17 at Memorial Park in Hendersonville.
Wirtz wins championship
After four days, the district individual girls championship belongs to Marisa Wirtz. The junior defeated Anindita Das 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-1, the closest match for Wirtz throughout the tournament.
Wirtz defeated Abby Linville in the second round before disposing of Sophia Parcescu 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinal round. Wirtz was named Most Valuable Player of the district.
“She is so easy to coach in the aspect of being the ultimate competitor,” Holliday said. “She has progressed greatly since the start of the year, and if she comes out and plays her game, she should give herself a shot at getting to Murfreesboro.”
Ramthun wins championship
Carter Ramthun won his second individual championship 6-0, 6-1 over Hendersonville’s Carter Brisson on May 3. The one set dropped by Ramthun was his only of the tournament.
The junior was also named Most Valuable Player of the district for the second year in a row.
“The best thing about Carter is, as good of a tennis player he is, he is a better teammate,” Holiday said. “He is always sticking our to help others in practice, even more so than I ever expected. It’s been a real blessing to me to have him out there.”
Bison boys, Etheredge and Watson win duo, team championships
The duo of Chase Etheredge and Lance Watson defeated Wilson Central 6-1, 6-0, in the championship round to win the first doubles championship in Bison tennis history.
Station Camp defeated Hendersonville 3-2 in the boys semifinals as Carter Ramthun, Lance Watson and Chase Etheredge defeated Carter Brisson, Jake Moore and Parker Berry. Hendersonville’s Wyatt Jones and Luke Cason won their respective matches, but it was the team of Ramthun/Shapiro and Etheredge/Watson who defeated Berry/Brisson, Jones/Moore, 9-7, 8-0 to advance to the final against Wilson Central.
